My girlfriend has finally started considering the possibility of starting to play Hearthstone. As someone who spends so much of their time thinking about, creating content for, and obviously playing the game, it's something I celebrated when told about. And while I've tempered my expectations, as she's likely to have an on-and-off relationship with the game for some time, there's one thing she said that stuck with me. She's a huge advocate for being able to play as female characters, understandably, whenever possible. So of course she posed that question to me when she finally passed Hearthstone's tutorial.

"Can I play as a girl?"

I knew the question was coming, and while it's a simple answer, it grew more complicated as I immediately had to explain what classes were, how they worked, etc. And even though she hasn't really touched Hearthstone since then, I'm well aware that it's very important she identify with the characters she's supposedly playing, even in a game like Hearthstone where that doesn't really affect anything.

And thus I started thinking about how each class can be rounded out with a male and female character. It was actually a lot of fun researching who was prominent and potentially big enough to warrant a hero in Hearthstone. While it's just a touch of what could come, it's interesting to learn about some of World of Warcraft's more prominent characters.

Male - Malfurion Stormrage

Female - Celestine of the Harvest

heromalfurion.pngdruid-portrait-celestine-of-the-harvest

Celestine of the Harvest is a Druid trainer afflicted with the worgen curse. After leaving Gilneas City, she moved to Stormwind City and subsequently became the town's Druid trainer when its park was destroyed in Cataclysm.
Time weathered and powerful, Malfurion Stormrage was the first night elf Druid, and trained under the tutelage of one of the most powerful demigods of Azeroth in the days of yore.

Malfurion continues to be a protector of both the Emerald Dream and Azeroth, battling against ancient and familiar enemies, such as Azshara’s demonic advisor Xavius, to protect his people. His wisdom and experience as a Druid have been honed to a fine point over the course of more than 10,000 years, and he continues to lead the Night Elf people to this very day alongside his beloved wife.

Male - Rexxar

Female - Alleria Windrunner

herore.pngheroalleria.png

Hunters already have a male and female hero to use from the first batch of alternate hero releases. We've included their backgrounds for a look at the lore behind them.

Alleria Windrunner is the eldest of the Windrunner sisters including Sylvanas Windrunner. She worked to push back the Horde during the invasion but gave in to revenge and ended up putting down all Orcs with no mercy.
Rexxar once called the Blade’s Edge Mountains home as one of the Mok’Nathal, a clan primarily composed of other half-ogres like himself. Unwelcome by both the full-blooded orcs and ogres in the area, the Mok’Nathal were secular and isolationist, wishing little else but to be left to their own devices. However, Rexxar saw great potential for his people in Azeroth, the world beyond the Dark Portal, and eventually left his isolated clan behind to join the Horde with his animal companion, Haratha the wolf. After being betrayed repeatedly by others of the orcish race, including Gul’dan the Warlock, Rexxar lost Haratha to the dark magic of orcish warlocks and turned to a life of solitude, joined only by those incapable of lies and treachery: the beasts of the wild.

Female - Jaina Proudmoore

Male - Medivh

herojaina.pngheromedivh.png

Medivh was supposed to be the last Guardian of Tirisfal, but he was corrupted before birth by Sargeras who used him to further his plan to conquer the world. At one point he teams up with our buddy Gul'Dan and opens the Dark Portal, letting the Burning Legion into Azeroth.
One of the most powerful magic-wielders on the face of Azeroth, the once kindhearted and compassionate Jaina Proudmoore has mastered the arcane arts, fought against demons of the Burning Legion and the undead Scourge, and gained a newfound fury towards the Horde after the destruction of her beloved Theramore.

Now the leader of the Kirin Tor, Jaina’s recent aggression towards the Horde is far from unfounded. Jaina Proudmoore’s raw magical power and simmering fury should not be underestimated.

Female - Yrel

herouther.pngpaladin-portrait-yrel

Yrel is a dranai paladin who was Prophet Velen's pupil growing up. Despite humble beginnings she became a champion of her people - helping Grommash Hellscream and and Khadgar to take down Archimonde in Warlords of Draenor, as such she has a deep backstory equaling that of the other classes.

The legendary Uther Lightbringer was the first Paladin of the Knights of the Silver Hand and a champion of the Light, sworn to defend the Alliance of Lordaeron from any potential threat. Wise, pious, and a beacon of hope to his allies, Uther is regarded as one of the greatest knights to ever live.

Male - Anduin Wrynn

Female - Tyrande Whisperwind

heroanduin.pngpriest-portrait-tyrande-whisperwind

It's almost fitting that Malfurion Stormrage's wife Tyrande Whisperwind would be the lead female candidate for Priests. One of the head night elf leaders and the high priestess of Elune ( Priestess of Elune), she worked closely with Jaina Proudmoore, Thrall, and Malfurion to battle against Archimonde. FullasGames did a really cool animated hero introduction for her!

Levelheaded and compassionate, the young Prince Anduin of Stormwind holds a different view of the world than that of his father, the warrior king Varian Wrynn. Where Varian has a taste for combat, Anduin instead found his calling in the Holy Light—a calling that would lead him to play a critical role in the recent conflict on Pandaria. Gather ’round as we tell you more about Anduin’s story. . . .

roguetest.png

Female - Valeera Sanguinar

Male - Master Mathias Shaw

herovaleera.pngrogue-portrait-master-mathias-shaw

Master Mathias Shaw is the head of the mysterious SI:7 agency and Stormwind Assassins. At 33 years old, he's very young to have so much responsibility on his shoulders, but he's proved time and again that he's fit for the job - he even trained Edwin VanCleef.
With Stormwind’s rightful king on the throne, Varian offered Valeera and Broll honored places in Stormwind as his trusted advisors and bodyguards. Valeera accepted, but later made her intentions clear: She would serve neither the Horde nor the Alliance, and her loyalties would lie only with Varian and Anduin. In Stormwind, Valeera finally had a place she could call home, alongside the friends she had grown to love

Alt - Wrathion

rogue-portrait-wrathion

We're throwing Wrathion in here as an alternate as no one knows his true class as of yet, though he does assist Rogues to obtain their Fangs of the Father. However, we do know he's a black dragon and that alone would make him a pretty cool hero. Players really love his mysterious nature and being able to embody that would resonate well with the community.

shamantest.png

Male - Thrall

Female - Magatha Grimtotem

herothrall.pngshaman-portrait-magatha-grimtotem

As leader of the Grimtotem clan, Magetha presents a very good case towards becoming a hero in Hearthstone. She has an extensive history with Cairne Bloodhoof and Baine Bloodhoof, often butting heads as to how best to lead the Tauren people.
From his humble beginnings as a slave to his rise as Warchief of the Horde, Thrall has cut a path through the history of Azeroth through his courageous actions, unfaltering will, and his mastery of the Elements as a Shaman.

warlocktest.png

Male - Gul'Dan

Female - Jubeka Shadowbreaker

heroguldan.png

Though no one may ever match the power of Gul'Dan, Jubeka is one of the more notable Warlocks in World of Warcraft. A member of the Council of the Black Harvest, she banished Kanrethad, after his attempts to control demons like Illidan Stormrage did.
Once called “Darkness Incarnate” and “Destroyer of Dreams,” Gul’dan was the first orc warlock and is considered one of the most powerful warlocks to have ever existed. He lived to amass power by any means necessary—even betraying his kin to those that sought to enslave them.

warriortest.png

Male - Garrosh Hellscream

Female - Azuka Bladefury

herogarrosh.png

Warlord of the Burning Blade clan, Azuka is one of the more notable female Warriors in WoW. She's well known for her plan to find the heart of an ancient magnaron (molten stone giant) named Gorgorek.
Garrosh Hellscream, son of the legendary Grommash Hellscream, discovered his self-worth under the guiding hand of Thrall, a master of the elements and powerful shaman. As part of Thrall’s Horde, Garrosh proved himself a terrifying warrior and an outstanding war leader. As Warchief of the Horde, his meteoric rise and tragic descent into despotism and hunger for power marked the path of a complex figure: an uncertain orc, out of his element and trying to live up to his father’s legacy. Garrosh sought to bring honor, glory, and prosperity to his people, but, for him, good intentions only paved a path of destruction.
