We talk about when the next Hearthstone rotation happens.

Hearthstone's new Standard format is still less than a year old so it's understandable that people are still unsure exactly how it functions. But since we frequently see players not only asking when this is happening but incorrectly informing others that the new Standard rotation starts after Mean Streets of Gadgetzen, we felt it was appropriate to job everyone's memory as to how the system functions. In short, Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and League of Explorers are not rotating out of Standard next month. They will remain part of the core experience until Spring 2017 when the next expansion releases.

We have no idea as to when that will be releasing in Spring.

So let's run down exactly how Standard currently works.

There are two sets in Hearthstone which will never be going away (at least if everything continues as it is) and those are Basic and Classic. They've been around since the launch of the game and will always be available. So feel free to get attached to your Tirion Fordring.

Outside of that, there are three other groupings of cards which we'll refer to as Set 1, the oldest trio of card sets; Set 2, the youngest trio of card sets; and Wild which contains anything that's already been rotated out.

Once a new year officially starts in Hearthstone, such as Year of the Kraken (not simply 2017), Set 1 rotates into Wild, Set 2 becomes Set 1, and Set 2 begins anew.

As of November 2016, this is what the picture looks like:

Standard - Evergreen

  • Basic
  • Classic

Standard - Set 1 - Old Cards

  • Blackrock Mountain
  • The Grand Tournament
  • The League of Explorers

Standard - Set 2 - New Cards

  • Whispers of the Old Gods
  • One Night In Karazhan
  • Mean Streets of Gadgetzan

Wild

  • Curse of Naxxramas
  • Goblins vs Gnomes

Still confused? Let's show how it functions through this video provided by Blizzard or visit StandardHearth which shows exactly when specific sets will be rotating out.

So around April of next year this is what things will look like:

Standard - Evergreen

  • Basic
  • Classic

Standard - Set 1

  • Whispers of the Old Gods
  • One Night In Karazhan
  • Mean Streets of Gadgetzan

Standard - Set 2

  • First Set of 2017
  • Second Set of 2017
  • Third Set of 2017

Wild

  • Curse of Naxxramas
  • Goblins vs Gnomes
  • Blackrock Mountain
  • The Grand Tournament
  • The League of Explorers

Hopefully that helps clarify things a bit. Decks are going to look very different from what you've gotten accustomed to once this rotation finally happens. We'll be running down which keystone cards are being rotated out of Standard at a later this year.
