In Hearthstone, Quests are a kind of task given out to every player. Each comes with a reward and a requirement you must fulfill to unlock whatever that may be for your account. Most of the rewards are given out in Gold, but some unique Quests can also give you other prizes like Arcane Dust or Card Packs.

There are two kinds of Quests – Unique and Daily. Unique Quests can be finished only once. The first Unique Quests are given to you right after the Tutorial – it’s a short series of four tasks that everyone needs to finish before proceeding to the normal Daily Quests. Daily Quests are repeatable missions given out to the players every day. Quests can be completed in any mode unless the Quest states otherwise (e.g. “Everyone! Get in here!” Quest can only be completed in the Tavern Brawl). Since the June 2017 patch, Quests can also be completed in Friendly Challenges.

How To Get New Quests

Daily Quests will appear in your Quest Log (the exclamation mark symbol in the Main Menu) every day. Each player gets a single new Daily Quest every day at midnight (PST for Americas, CEST for Europe and Korea time for Asia). You can have up to three Quests in your Quest Log at the time – if your Log is full at the time you should get a new Quest, the new Quest is discarded (which means that the Gold you could get from it is gone). Remember that you need to re-log or play and finish a match in order to see a new Quest if you’re logged in when they are distributed.

Unlike Daily Quests, Unique Quests don’t appear in your Quest log (besides the four that lead to your first Dailies). They are hidden, in a way that you will see them only after you finish them. Some of the Unique Quests are called “achievements” by the community because they’re hard to finish and are by no means something new players should aim for. For example, you get some rewards for completing your Classic collection or for winning 1000 games – that’s a lot of work!

Maximizing Gold Gain

Quests are the biggest part of the casual player’s gold gain. They have the highest ratio of gold gain relative to the amount of time they require to complete. You can finish most of them in just a few games and they reward you with 52.5g on average. Any player who wants to maximize their gold from Quests should follow those two simple rules:

Don’t Miss a Daily Quest. Even if your Quest Log is full of 40g Quests and you really want to reroll something, missing a Quest means losing around 50g. If you’re at 3 Quests, try to finish at least one before midnight.

Use the re-roll function every day. There are X marks in the upper-right corner of every Quest. Once per day (it resets at the same time Quests do), you can reroll one Quest. It’s always worth to reroll 40g Quests – you simply can’t get anything worse. When it comes to 50g Quests, it’s 50/50 – while theoretically, it’s still worth to reroll them, the incentive is much smaller and you can actually get a worse outcome. The rule of thumb is that you should keep the ones that are easy to finish (e.g. winning 3 games with the class you like) and reroll those that you don’t like (e.g. playing 15 Demons if you don’t want to play Warlock).

To add some math to the problem – Daily Quests are worth 52.5g on average. The chance to reroll 50g Quest into 40g Quest is exactly the same as the chance to reroll it into a 60g+. However, when you reroll it “down” to 40g, you always lose 10g. When you reroll it up to 60g you also gain 10g. But there is also a chance to reroll it up to 80g or 100g ones, which makes the rerolling up have a bit higher value on average, even though it has the same chance.

This means that rerolling 50g Quests should be worth it. But it doesn’t take one thing into the account – cooldowns. Most of the players don’t know about it, but Quests in Hearthstone have a sort of hidden cooldown. When you finish a Quest, you can’t get the same Quest within the next few days. While it has never been tested thoroughly (given that you can only get a single Quest per day, getting enough data is a bit difficult), the Cooldown seems to be at least three days – maybe even longer for the better Quests. Because of this, if you’ve just finished a 100g Quest, or even a 60g Quest recently, then the expected value goes down from 52.5g and much closer to 50g. Which means that rerolling 50g Quests is really up to personal preference – if you like a Quest, you should probably finish it and if you don’t like it, you should reroll it.

Continuing on the rerolling point – if you want to absolutely maximize the Gold gain, try to not finish your 40g Quests until your Quest log is full. Let’s say that you have only a single 40g Quest in your log and you reroll it into another 40g Quest. If you leave it be, you have another chance to reroll it next day. Maybe you will get a 60g Quest which you don’t need to reroll and finishing the 40g Quest right away would mean that you’ve wasted a reroll. It’s really only for the players that want to min-max, and to do this you need to play daily and control your Quest log really well. If you don’t play Hearthstone every day, it’s probably better to finish them right away, because if you leave them lingering and you happen to skip a day when your Quest log is full, then the whole process simply isn’t worth it.
