The returning minion's

effects on the returning minion also do not trigger; Overload functions similarly to Battlecries.
Ancestral Spirit is applied to target minion as a buff and can be
. The buff is considered to be a Deathrattle effect.
The returning minion will enter play on the same side as the original dying minion. This is of note since you can cast this spell on an enemy minion, and it will revive on his side of the board.
If you cast 2 copies of Ancestral Spirit on the same minion, it will resummon itself twice on death, as expected.
If you cast
on a minion affected by Ancestral Spirit, the minion is first killed, any Deathrattles will trigger (Ancestral Spirit's copy is resummoned here), then finally Reincarnate's copy is summoned. If the target is

It is also commonly used on minions with

It can be used a minion with a useful Deathrattle to be able to trigger it again (eg,
Because the effect is a granted Deathrattle, the effect is delayed and it is not as versatile as

You can use Ancestral Spirit on enemy minions if it has a beneficial Deathrattle to you, such as
. Not always the right move, but it can be hilarious.
's conflicting comment replies below:
Ancestral Spirit was recently changed (unknown when) such that casting 2 copies of it on the same minion will now return 2 copies of the minion to appear after the target dies. This was done in preparation for the Naxxramas adventure to work with
's ability, and that Ancestral Spirit's tooltip will be updated so that it reads more along the lines of: "Deathrattle: Resummon this minion". (

Ancestral Spirit has new card text in Naxxramas that makes it clear that it grants a Deathrattle effect and summons a new copy. (Source:
) The old card text said "Choose a minion. When that minion is destroyed, return it to the battlefield." and makes no mention of "Deathrattle".
Under whose control does the minion return to? If I cast this on my opponent's minion, will I gain control of it when it comes back?
Does anyone know if this triggers (or re-triggers, rather) Overload?
If you play this on a sun walker and it dies it revives with divine shield its a great delay play.
What happens if you use this on let us say... King Krush, then it gets hexed/polmorphed then killed, does it return as a frog/chicken, or back to its glorious form as King Krush?
The flavor text is in reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail's Black Knight character.
There is also an NPC in wow called
The Black Knight
as well as a legendary card in hearthstone also called
The Black Knight
that are in reference to the same character.
I don't have hearthstone yet :C but I've been wondering:
If I summoned a
on it and charged an enemy minion, would I be able to attack a second time after it died and was returned?
I'd guess not as it says 'return it to the battlefield' so it might remember that my wolf rider already attacked that turn, but if it doesn't remember, the charge would let it attack straight away (for the 2nd time in a turn). Any ideas on if this works?
If you fear of casting this and having it removed via silence, you can always play it on a minion and force that minion into death. Would work well with big chunky minions such as

It's not said on the card, but the minion returns on his controller's side of the battlefield. So if enemy mind controls your minion with the spirit, he keeps the copy as well (

One or two comments aluded to this, but I'll state it outright:
If you plan on using it, the almost-certain best way of utilizing it is on a minion you intend to trade with something. In that way, it sort of acts as 2 mana removal that scales with the strength of the minions you have out, and has the major upside of not being interfered with by the opponent (this is the same reason why it's often safer to save Divine Protection or Blessing of Might for when you actually plan to utilize the buffs).
Actually, it more or less does become a 2 mana Divine Protection for shamans - except that deathrattles will get triggered, and battlecries won't, making for some more-powerful-than-divine-shield shenanigans (ie. using it on a minion that usually enters play with divine shield - like Scarlet Crusader - will bring them back complete with shield; using it on a powerful deathrattle minion like Cairne will bring him back, as well as giving you Baine; using it on a usually-negative battlecry like Injured Blademaster brings the minion back stronger than ever, etc.). Now that I think about it, it may be no coincidence that this card is in the same class as Al'akir. With a Flametongue Totem already out, you could play Al'Akir + this at 10 mana, and potentially destroy 3 5-or-less health minions for 1 card (given that you'll still have Al'Akir around). Or you can kill 2 for 1 card, and do 10 to the face as is normally done. :-P
What will happen when this card and the new shaman rebirth/reincarnation card combined on a minion. Duplicate ?
Creepy enough. We can see on the picture: a yolo troll with no shamanistic hand glowing, armor or totems is returning the spirit to hes undead friend with an unknown zone in the background. Intresting thing about the golden picture: the spirit is leaving the body. Coincedence? I thing yes.
I think this card will be nerfed hard and/or one/all of the next cards:
In conjuction this cards can create a field almost immposible to overcome. And it's not really hard to establish that situation. And last but not least every single card it's good on it's own. Sure you have to create a dedicated deck but it deserves the effort.
