Obtaining the Card
This card is obtained by unlocking the Plague Quarter of Naxxramas and defeating the for it. Specifically, this card is a reward from the achievement. The Class Challenge involves beating
Heigan the Unclean
with a special deck constructed by Blizzard that you must use.
Unlocking the Mage Challenge first requires you to defeat the entire Plague Quarter in Normal difficulty. But unlocking the Plague Quarter first requires you to unlock the Arachnid Quarter (you don't have to beat it), as the wings of Naxxramas must be unlocked in order. (Source:
This means Unlock Arachnid -> Unlock Plague -> Defeat Plague (Normal) -> Defeat Mage Challenge.
The golden version of this card can only be obtained by crafting, and only after obtaining the non-golden version of the card.
The non-golden version cannot be disenchanted. The golden version can be disenchanted.
Secrets do not trigger on your own turn
, so you cannot use Duplicate offensively by killing your own minions on your turn.
If your hand is full, Duplicate
will still trigger
, but do nothing.
If your hand has 9 cards, Duplicate will only place one copy of the dying minion in your hand.

A minion that is returned to a player's hand but unable to do so because the hand has a full 10 cards will instead die. A minion dying this way will have any Deathrattles on it trigger, and this death will also trigger Duplicate (and do nothing, since the hand is full).
Notable quirks and interactions
If on your turn, an enemy
dies with an enemy Minion X at the same time, and the Mad Scientist is the older minion, then Mad Scientist will die first and his Deathrattle will also resolve first. If Mad Scientist causes a Duplicate to be put in play, Duplicate will immediately trigger when Minion X's death is next processed. This will cause 2 copies of Minion X to be placed in your opponent's hand.
Duplicate is a somewhat slow card, especially since it does not contribute to board control early game.
It is also possible to play around it with
and cause the
to be duplicated.
When playing Duplicate, you should have less than 8 cards in your hand by the end of your turn if you have at least one minion. If you allow the 2 copies to fill up your hand to 10 cards, you will lose the next card you draw at the start of your next turn.
This card +
= 7 of any minion.

Edit: I don't understand why I got downrated, as this is possible.
It's certainly a fun card, and in a vacuum it's card advantage - however, as Xinhuan mentions, it's pretty slow, coming in at 3 mana, and contributing less to the board than similar secret Mirror Entity. Of course, there is one card which can get around that - Kirin Tor Mage, which is fairly statted for a vanilla 3 drop, but would have some nice backup if this were played after it.
Perhaps the biggest issue if you include the Kirin Tor Mage is, how many other secrets should you include to consistently get the tempo burst, before you have too many and don't have enough direct-action cards?
In any case, I hope someone manages to find a way to abuse it. There's a fair chance that when we get
, that guy alongside Kirin Tor will make a mage secrets deck somewhat viable. At this point in time though, if included I'd more or less consider it a late game card; the kind of thing that you don't simply play out, but instead play out on of your later turns along with a strong minion like Azure Drake or Cairne.
Playing as mage:
This card is good for the Arena if you didn't happen to pick enough card draw items. It can be your saving grace when the game goes into 1-card-in-hand mode.
Though you usually want it to copy powerful minions. Say, if your opponent kills
before he kills
, the Duplicate was basically a waste.
Playing as mage opponent:
This cards adds a shift into anti-secret play logic:
If there's a choice, always kill weaker minion first against a mage who has put down a secret.
It can sometimes be useful to have it duplicate a mirror image as you then get two 0 cost taunts which can be played at any time to possibly delay things for a turn.
I also got caught out the other day with having a spellbender active at the same time as a duplicate. The enemy attacked my Sorcerer's Apprentice which I was hoping would get duplicated but the spellbender took the hit instead and I ended up with two 0 cost 1/3 minions instead. Having said that, they ended up being quite useful for several rounds so it wasn't quite the disaster it could have been!
When i attack with my minion and it does, it does not duplicate. Is it bugged? Also won't duplicate minions killed by spells. I think it is bugged. The text says when it dies. It does not say it has to die by opponent minion attack.
Turn 10 Archmage Antonidas + Duplicate will make your enemy cry.
With King Mukla in arena have your opponent give a banana party
I have found
to be a great card to duplicate. It's only happened to me twice but I won both games when it did!
Just had this trigger on
twice in one match, resulting in 6 Leper Gnomes total, or 12 damage from deathrattles alone, not to mention their face damage.

Since zoo & aggro decks are so common in current meta, opponent can go to face while you have
on, leaving it unrevealed and unuseful.
It can be useful then to add Taunt on some your best minions to force
to trigger on them.
