Shadow Word: Pain
Destroy a minion with 3 or less Attack.
A step up from a spell cast by many beginning acolytes: "Shadow Word: Annoy".
This card is used in
69.42% of all Priest decks
Golden version unlocked at Priest level 36 and 38
Very efficient card. No matter how much hp the targeted minion has the spell will kill it. Great value against the costly low attack and high hp creatures.
- It will kill the minion even if it has Divine Shield up
- If the targeted minion has deathrattle it will be triggered when it dies
- Oddly enough when you kill
Acolyte of Pain
with it he will not grant card draw as usually when he dies
- If there is a
on the field and you kill a creature with the spell there will be card draw
- The card is not affected by spell power so there is no chance to raise the damage limit to target 4 dmg creatures
- It can be turned against your own creatures
- It will kill minions with 0 attack as well
Here is the above mechanics demonstrated on video
When against a priest, be prepared to have both round 1 and round 2 minions die to this. So don't play anything you don't want to lose!
Rule of thumb
2 of your minions will die with 3 or less attack (SWP)
4+ of your minions will die with two or less health (Holy Smite / Holy Nova)
2 of your minions will die with 5 or more attakc (SWD)
2 of your minions will be pit against you at some point in the game (MC)
Shadow Word: Death
effects 5 and higher, 4 attack is a sweet spot where card can't be effected by those pair of removals.
I'm always sort of amazed when I see a Priest deck that doesn't include this card. It kills Sen'jin Shieldmasta *and* Sludge Belcher, two of the nastiest and most absurdly popular taunters in the game, and it's so cheap that you can usually do other things on the same turn you do so. There are a sickening number of utility minions that this erases, including Maexxna and Baron Rivendare. If you're not running it, you had better have a very good reason.
When used on unbuffed
Burly Rockjaw Trogg
or once buffed
, the spell would check it as valid target before the next buff, so a Trogg would get more attack, but die anyway.
